Port of Klaipėda posts strong Q1 growth despite global challenges

Klaipėda Port

The Klaipėda State Seaport Authority reported a solid start to the year, with cargo volumes rising 9% in the first quarter. The port handled nearly 11 million tonnes, making it the only Baltic port to achieve growth during the period.

Container volumes led the surge, jumping 38% year over year. Over 4 million tonnes and more than 374,000 TEUs were handled, marking the best container performance in the port’s history. March delivered record monthly results.

Ro-ro cargo increased by 5%, reaching almost 1.7 million tonnes. LNG volumes also grew strongly, up 26% to 827,000 tonnes, driven by regional demand as Baltic countries diversify energy sources.

Fertilizer handling rose 27% to over 500,000 tonnes, supported by Lithuanian exports and shifting supply flows following sanctions on Russia and Belarus. Oil products remained stable at just over 1 million tonnes.

Some segments declined. Grain volumes fell to 752,000 tonnes, while minerals, scrap metal, and timber also dropped compared to last year.

The port recorded 1,123 vessel calls, down 7%, and passenger numbers decreased slightly to just over 36,000.

Despite mixed segment performance, strong gains in key cargo categories helped Klaipėda outperform regional rivals. The port now holds nearly 46% of the Baltic market, ahead of Riga, Tallinn, Ventspils, and Liepāja.
