The Nordic Investment Bank has signed a EUR 55.5 million uncommitted credit facility with AB Klaipėda State Seaport Authority to support a broad infrastructure investment programme at Klaipėda Seaport in Lithuania.

The total cost of the investment programme is approximately EUR 111 million, with NIB financing covering half of the programme value. The agreement marks the sixth loan arrangement between NIB and Klaipėda State Seaport Authority since 2002, bringing cumulative NIB lending to the port to EUR 147.5 million.

The programme covers a range of infrastructure improvements designed to strengthen maritime safety, increase cargo handling capacity, improve environmental performance and enhance security and operational resilience.

Key components include upgrades to navigational infrastructure and port access, new passenger and cruise facilities, modernisation of port authority assets, radar system upgrades and improvements to cyber resilience.

The cruise terminal component represents approximately 45% of the total investment, reflecting the growing importance of passenger traffic at the port.

On the sustainability side, the programme includes the deployment of onshore power supply systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels at berth, and the development of Lithuania’s first green hydrogen production and refuelling hub, which is nearing completion as a separate project milestone.

The investment programme also supports diversification into offshore wind logistics and broader green energy operations.

Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, described the programme as a step toward the port of the future, combining capacity expansion, green technology deployment and safety enhancement to position Klaipėda as a modern, sustainable and resilient logistics platform.

André Küüsvek, President and CEO of NIB, highlighted the port’s role in supporting regional supply chain resilience and maintaining reliable trade links in a changing economic and geopolitical environment.

Klaipėda Seaport is Lithuania’s principal maritime gateway and the largest seaport in the Baltic states, handling approximately 35 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 and representing nearly 40% of the regional market.
