Rhenus Road Freight has received approval to begin construction of a new transshipment hub in Dortmund, Germany.

The facility is scheduled to become operational in 2027 and will replace the company’s existing site in nearby Unna.

The new hub will be Rhenus Road Freight’s first purpose-built transshipment facility in Germany developed entirely in-house.

The site will include 11,000 square metres of transshipment space and around 100 loading bays to support faster cross-docking and more efficient freight handling.

The Dortmund location offers direct access to the A1, A2, A44 and A45 motorways, improving north-south and east-west transport connections across Germany.

Thilo Meutzner, Managing Director Road Freight at Rhenus, said the investment will strengthen the company’s network.

“By planning and implementing the facility entirely in-house, we can align infrastructure, processes and security standards with our operational needs while future-proofing the location.”

The hub will meet TAPA security standards with controlled access systems for handling sensitive cargo.

Rhenus also plans to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” sustainability certification. The facility will feature photovoltaic panels, air-to-water heat pumps and a retention roof.

All employees from the Unna site will relocate to Dortmund once the facility opens.

Michael Rehbein, Regional Manager at Rhenus Road Freight, said the move will preserve operational expertise while improving efficiency.

“All employees from Unna will move to the new Dortmund site, ensuring established teams remain intact while benefiting from improved infrastructure and connectivity.”
