Maersk names first vessel of its large methanol-enabled fleet

The world’s first large methanol-enabled container vessel has been named “Ane Maersk” at a ceremony in the shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea.

This vessel pays tribute to Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation and A.P. Moller Holding, with the naming ceremony featuring her eldest granddaughter as the godmother. The ship was christened through the traditional breaking of a champagne bottle over its bow.

“This series of vessels will have a transformative impact on our ambition to progress on our industry-leading climate ambitions. It is a visual and operational proof of our commitment to a more sustainable industry. With Ane Maersk and her sister vessels we are expanding our offer to the growing number of businesses aiming to reduce emissions from their supply chains,” stated Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller-Maersk.

The boxship Ane Maersk represents the first of Maersk’s fleet of 18 large methanol-enabled vessels, scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025. Positioned as the world’s second methanol-enabled container vessel, it is set to commence operations on the AE7 string connecting Asia and Europe in early February.

Furthermore, the vessel boasts an industry-leading design placing the bridge and accommodation at the forefront, ensuring optimal fuel efficiency in its operations.
