Maersk will introduce a no-load policy for export cargo from Australia and New Zealand, requiring customers to complete their shipping documentation before vessel planning.

The Maersk no-load policy will have a soft launch on 2 November 2026. Full enforcement will begin on 30 November 2026 for eligible shipments loaded from that date.

How the Maersk no-load policy will work

Exporters must submit complete and accurate Shipping Instructions by the published deadline. They must then review the Verify Copy, or draft bill of lading, and promptly request any necessary amendments.

The entire Verify Copy process must be completed no later than 38 hours before the vessel’s estimated arrival.

In Australia, the deadline applies at the first load port. In New Zealand, it applies at the compliance or deep-sea load port rather than the feeder port.

Cargo that does not meet the deadline will not qualify for inclusion in the final load list. Maersk may consequently transfer affected shipments to the next available vessel.

For bookings involving split Transport Documents, customers must complete every applicable Verify Copy. An outstanding document could affect the entire shipment.

Maersk warned that customers may face storage, detention, demurrage, terminal handling, rehandling and other additional costs resulting from delayed or incomplete documentation.

The carrier said the policy should improve documentation readiness, prevent avoidable delays and support more reliable cargo connections. It also supports SOLAS requirements by providing advance information about cargo planned for loading.
