The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is facing renewed pressure after Donald Trump sharply criticized Tehran’s latest response to a US peace proposal and signaled that Washington could resume military action.

Speaking on Monday, Trump described the ceasefire as being “on life support” after rejecting Iran’s proposal, which he called “stupid” and “garbage.”

The comments came one day after Iran submitted its response through Pakistani mediators. Tehran’s proposal reportedly focused on ending the war across the region, including in Lebanon, where Israel continues clashes with Iran-backed Hezbollah forces.

Iran also demanded compensation for war damage, reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and called on Washington to end its naval blockade, lift sanctions and remove restrictions on Iranian oil exports.

Trump said he did not fully read the Iranian response before dismissing it. He also claimed Iran was prepared to hand over what he described as “nuclear dust,” referring to the country’s enriched uranium stockpile.

According to reports, Trump is expected to meet with senior national security officials to discuss possible military options against Iran.

The meeting is expected to include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

US officials cited by Axios said Trump is considering limited strikes aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran and forcing concessions over its nuclear program.

The latest escalation has intensified concerns over shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions have already affected global oil flows and maritime trade.

Despite the renewed rhetoric, Trump said diplomatic efforts remain ongoing and confirmed he plans to discuss the Iran conflict with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming visit to China.
