The Management Committee of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port System Authority, chaired by President Paolo Piacenza, has approved two strategically significant measures addressing port labour sustainability at Gioia Tauro and the energy transition across the five-port system.
The Management Committee approved an Addendum to the update of the Organic Port Plan, a document requested by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the evaluation of the Authority’s application to transform the current Port Agency into the entity envisaged by Law 84/94.
The Addendum supplements the Plan with a detailed analysis of actual labour needs at the port of Gioia Tauro, incorporating preliminary investigation into traffic trends, demand for port labour and the evolution of work placement days.
The analysis is designed to enable more accurate assessment of employment and staffing needs, laying the foundation for economic and financial sustainability and planning aligned with the evolution of traffic and port activities.
President Piacenza described the Addendum as providing a timely knowledge tool to guide future decisions on work organisation and employment needs, emphasising that Gioia Tauro’s growth must be accompanied by a sustainable and flexible port labour system capable of responding to current and future operational requirements.
The Management Committee also approved the resolution to initiate the process for establishing one or more Renewable Energy Communities across the MTMI Port System, implementing guidelines previously defined in the Port System Energy and Environmental Planning Document approved in 2024.
The programme will involve the ports of Gioia Tauro, Crotone, Corigliano Calabro, Taureana di Palmi and Vibo Valentia, with potential extension to functionally connected hinterland areas where technical and legal conditions permit.
The initiative aims to build a model connecting renewable energy production, energy sharing and the operational needs of port activities, directly involving the port community.
Consultations with operators, concessionaires, terminal operators, public bodies and other interested parties are expected to begin by December 31, 2026, with subsequent phases in 2027 focused on defining legal structures, energy configurations and access to incentive mechanisms.
