Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has launched a tender for the construction of two firm methanol-ready containerships with a capacity of 1,700 TEU each, along with options for four additional vessels, according to DynaLiners.

Under the tender conditions, Indian shipyards will have the right of first refusal to match offers submitted by foreign yards.

However, domestic yards will also be required to demonstrate sufficient technical capability and experience, or alternatively establish partnerships with international ship designers or builders in order to qualify for the project.

The move reflects SCI’s efforts to support fleet modernisation while encouraging the development of India’s domestic shipbuilding sector and alternative-fuel vessel expertise.
