Samsung Heavy Industries, Lloyd’s Register sign ammonia-fuelled boxship agreement

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Lloyd’s Register have signed a joint development project (JDP) for approval in principle (AiP) for an ammonia-fuelled 9,300 TEU container ship.

Under the agreement, SHI will work with Eastern Pacific Shipping to conduct the design studies on the ammonia-fuelled container vessel and Lloyd’s Register will provide the review of SHI deliverables and technical advice for further design development.

This AiP follows another recently awarded AiP to SHI and Amogy for an 88,000 cbm fuel cell-powered ammonia carrier, which uses ammonia cracking to create hydrogen for the fuel cell stored onboard.

Sung-Gu Park, President of North East Asia at Lloyd’s Register, said, “There is a growing demand for container vessels that incorporate innovative technologies to comply with stringent regulations and environmental standards for zero carbon.

“Lloyd’s Register is at the forefront of meeting the maritime sector’s need for innovative design development and approval for ammonia fuelled vessels, while also providing our clients and potential clients with access to cutting-edge advancements in ship design and propulsion systems.”

The agreement announcement was made on 19 September at Gastech 2024, taking place in Houston, US.

Hae Ki Jang, CTO & EVP of SHI, stated, “Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel for a future eco-friendly society. Through this JDP, SHI will continue to develop technologies that position itself as a market leading company, driving forward sustainable fuel solutions for the maritime sector.”
