Rio Brasil Terminal adds quay cranes

Rio Brasil Terminal, ICTSI's operation at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, has taken delivery of two new quay cranes.

Rio Brasil Terminal, ICTSI’s operation at the Port of Rio de Janeiro, has taken delivery of two new quay cranes as part of its ongoing expansion and modernisation programme, bringing the terminal’s total crane count to six.

The new equipment is designed to handle vessels up to 400 metres in length overall and carrying up to 20,000 TEUs, supporting improved berth utilisation and faster vessel turnaround times.

Roberto Lopes, CEO of RBT, described the new cranes as a significant development in the terminal’s broader expansion and modernisation programme, which is targeted for completion in 2029 and is expected to contribute to increased operational efficiency and enhanced service quality for customers.

The investment responds to substantial growth in container volumes at the Port of Rio since 2023, reflecting robust expansion in Brazilian foreign trade alongside a growing trend toward larger vessels calling at ports along South America’s east coast.

Beyond crane acquisition, the modernisation programme includes the unification and expansion of storage yards, reorganisation of operational areas to optimise internal process flows, and the adoption of advanced technologies and automation.

Once complete, the programme will increase RBT’s annual capacity to 750,000 TEUs, consolidating the Port of Rio’s position as a leading logistics hub for Brazil’s Southwest and Midwest regions while helping mitigate bottlenecks experienced at other Brazilian ports and strengthening the broader national logistics chain.
