The Port of Tyne has welcomed the Crown Estate’s launch of Round 6 offshore wind leasing for the North East Seabed area, which is expected to unlock over six gigawatts of clean energy capacity, sufficient to power more than six million homes.
The announcement is seen as a significant accelerant for the developing offshore wind cluster in the North East of England and a driver of long-term green employment across the region.
As the closest deep-water port to the planned North East Seabed Leasing Area, the Port of Tyne is positioned to play a central role in supporting the new projects that will emerge from the leasing round.
The port has an established track record in offshore wind project support, having contributed to the Dogger Bank, Sofia and Hornsea 3 developments, and offers a 230-acre development footprint across both banks of the River Tyne alongside specialist facilities and Investment Zone and Industrial Strategy Zone site status.
CEO Matt Beeton described the Crown Estate announcement as providing further momentum for the regional cluster, building on investments the port is already making in infrastructure, skills and the Tyne Clean Energy Park.
He highlighted the alignment between the port’s capabilities and the Mayor’s Green Energy Jobs Plan, framing targeted infrastructure investment as a proven mechanism for generating high-quality employment in the region.
The Round 6 leasing is expected to drive regional economic growth, strengthen offshore wind supply chains and deliver sustained job creation across the North East as the UK advances its clean energy transition in the North Sea.
