Hanwha Ocean and Leidos have announced a collaboration to develop next-generation naval ship designs and strengthen shipbuilding capacity for the United States and its allies.

The partnership combines Hanwha Ocean’s large-scale shipbuilding capabilities with Leidos’ naval design and engineering expertise. The companies aim to deliver production-ready solutions aligned with U.S. Navy requirements and global defense needs.

The collaboration will focus on adapting Hanwha’s ship designs to meet U.S. Navy standards. It will also include joint development of next-generation surface combatants for both U.S. and international markets.

The partners plan to build a resilient supply chain across the United States and South Korea. They will also work on ship designs that support faster production and long-term maintenance.

Hanwha Ocean brings experience in building advanced naval vessels, including submarines and surface ships. Its U.S. subsidiary, Philly Shipyard, is expected to play a growing role in future naval programmes.

Leidos contributes advanced maritime technologies and strong design capabilities. Its Gibbs & Cox unit has designed more than 70% of U.S. Navy surface combatants since World War II.

“This partnership gives us an opportunity to strengthen our position in the global naval shipbuilding market,” said Charlie SC Eoh, President of Naval Ship Business at Hanwha Ocean. “We aim to deliver advanced solutions through close collaboration with Leidos.”

“By working with Hanwha, we combine proven design expertise with world-class manufacturing,” said Mike Rickels, Senior Vice President for Maritime at Leidos. “We will deliver ships built for current missions and future needs.”

The partnership highlights growing cooperation between U.S. and South Korean shipbuilding industries to support evolving defense requirements
