Ocean Terminal renovation reaches 55% completion at Port of Savannah

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has completed 55% of the renovation project at Ocean Terminal in Savannah.

The nearly US$1.6 billion investment will increase the terminal’s annual container capacity from 200,000 TEUs to 1.75 million TEUs.

GPA said the project will help meet growing demand driven by population growth and manufacturing expansion across the U.S. Southeast.

The authority has already upgraded the first of two berths at Ocean Terminal.

The berth is currently serving vessels and can also be used as a staging area for Garden City Terminal.

Construction of the second berth is expected to finish by the end of June 2026.

Once completed, Ocean Terminal will be able to accommodate two large vessels simultaneously across 2,650 feet of berth space.

GPA plans to open the first half of the renovated container yard in autumn 2027. The full yard redevelopment is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

The project also includes major improvements to truck access.

The new gate complex is now 80% complete, with some components already operational.

By November 2026, the facility will feature 12 inbound lanes and six outbound lanes.

A new US$29 million overpass now allows outbound trucks to access U.S. Route 17 and Interstate 16 directly, reducing congestion on local roads.

Truck drivers serving Ocean Terminal also use the GPA Trucker app, which provides container location information and digital gate transaction notifications.

Additional upgrades include new equipment, yard improvements and operational buildings.

Despite ongoing construction, Ocean Terminal handled approximately 84,000 TEUs in 2025.

GPA expects the project to increase the Port of Savannah’s total annual capacity to 9 million TEUs by 2029.

The Ocean Terminal redevelopment forms part of Georgia Ports’ long-term master plan, which includes US$5 billion in capacity investments over the next decade.
