The Port of Klaipėda in Lithuania has completed trials of a private 5G network, marking a step toward greater automation and digitalization of its port operations.
Santa Monica Networks and Latvian telecommunications provider LMT have also completed the design phase for a potential port-wide private 5G network.
The project included demonstrations of autonomous technologies and digital systems in a real port environment. These applications could support equipment monitoring, inspections and operational decision-making.
Autonomous drones and vessels demonstrate 5G capabilities
During the trials, technology providers demonstrated how private 5G connectivity could support automated port activities.
Atlas presented its AtlasNEST and AtlasPRO drone systems. The technology allows drones to operate remotely, conduct inspections and return to their stations for recharging.
The system could help port operators monitor infrastructure and inspect areas that are difficult to access.
Meanwhile, LVR Flote demonstrated its Otter uncrewed surface vessel, which supports hydrographic surveys of harbor waters.
The company also presented tools for transferring and processing survey data. Combined with 5G connectivity, these systems could reduce manual work and accelerate data analysis.
Private 5G could support port automation
A private 5G network would allow the Port of Klaipėda to manage connectivity across its infrastructure.
The port could prioritize critical communications, control connected devices and manage sensitive operational data within its own network.
According to the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, these capabilities could support automation while improving communication reliability and operational resilience.
“A private 5G network could unlock even more opportunities for the Port of Klaipėda by enabling the implementation of advanced solutions, process automation, and increased operational capacity,” said Algis Latakas, Director General, Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
The technology could also help maintain secure communications during operational disruptions.
Building on experience at the Port of Riga
LMT has already deployed a private 5G network at the Baltic Container Terminal in the Port of Riga.
The network covers more than 50 hectares and supports daily terminal operations, including connectivity for mobile equipment and critical communications.
The experience provides a practical reference for the potential development of similar infrastructure at Klaipėda.
However, the Lithuanian port has not announced a final decision or implementation timetable for a permanent port-wide 5G network.
