Port of Antwerp-Bruges has appointed Rob Smeets as CEO for a six-year term.

He succeeds Jacques Vandermeiren, who announced his departure in April.

The Board of Directors selected Smeets after a recruitment process involving multiple candidates and interviews.

Smeets brings more than 20 years of experience within the port authority.

He has held several senior leadership roles during that time.

He led the Towage Department from 2014.

In 2017, he became Director of Nautical Operations.

Since 2019, he has served on the Executive Committee as Chief Operations Officer.

Following Vandermeiren’s departure announcement, Smeets also took over as interim CEO.

The board said his operational experience and deep understanding of the port made him the strongest candidate.

The authority expects him to lead the port through a period of major investments, geopolitical uncertainty and industrial challenges.

“I am grateful to the Board of Directors for their trust,” said Rob Smeets, CEO of Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

He said the port aims to strengthen its international position while preparing for future challenges.

Chairman Johan Klaps said appointing a new CEO quickly ensured continuity for the organization.

“Rob knows the Port Authority and the port like no one else,” Klaps said.

He added that Smeets brings experience in managing investments, budgets and change programs.

Vice-Chair Dirk De fauw said the recruitment process attracted strong interest.

He said Smeets stood out due to his experience, leadership skills and understanding of the port ecosystem.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges expects the appointment to support long-term growth and operational continuity.
