MSC updates emergency fuel surcharge for Red Sea and East Africa trades

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has announced updated Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) for cargo moving from Northern Europe.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has announced updated Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) for cargo moving from Northern Europe, including the UK and Scanbaltic region, to the Red Sea and East Africa.

The company said recent developments in the Middle East have caused major disruption in global fuel markets, resulting in higher marine fuel prices and reduced bunker fuel availability at traditional sourcing hubs.

According to MSC, the situation has increased procurement challenges and operational costs across its network.

The revised surcharge will apply from May 16 to May 31, 2026, based on bill of lading date.

For cargo from Scanbaltic to the Red Sea, the surcharge has been set at USD 185 per dry TEU and USD 275 per reefer TEU. Shipments from Scanbaltic to East Africa will face charges of USD 295 per dry TEU and USD 440 per reefer TEU.

From Northern Europe, including the UK, to the Red Sea, MSC will apply USD 125 per dry TEU and USD 190 per reefer TEU. Cargo to East Africa will be subject to surcharges of USD 240 per dry TEU and USD 355 per reefer TEU.
