Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd. reported strong financial results for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2026, supported by growth across its core marine propulsion and logistics systems businesses.
The Japanese engineering group achieved its third consecutive year of revenue and profit growth, driven by a large project backlog, expanding demand for dual-fuel marine engines and improved profitability in its container crane operations.
Operating income climbed to ¥37.6 billion, compared with ¥23.1 billion in the previous fiscal year, while net sales increased to ¥353.2 billion from ¥315.1 billion. Ordinary income rose sharply to ¥44.9 billion.
The company said profitability improved significantly due to higher sales volumes and ongoing cost reduction initiatives, particularly in its Marine Propulsion Systems and Logistics Systems segments. Operating profit margin reached a record-high 10.7%.
Orders decline despite strong demand
New orders totalled ¥315.8 billion, down from ¥421.7 billion a year earlier. Mitsui E&S attributed the decline mainly to the exceptionally high volume of bulk marine engine orders secured during the previous fiscal year.
Despite the year-on-year decline, the company said demand for marine engines remained strong, particularly for dual-fuel engines, amid tightening environmental regulations across global shipping markets.
The Marine Propulsion Systems segment delivered the strongest profit improvement, with operating income increasing by ¥7 billion year-on-year to ¥14.5 billion. Revenue in the segment rose to ¥149.7 billion.
Mitsui E&S highlighted growing momentum for dual-fuel engine technologies, stating that cumulative orders for environmentally friendly dual-fuel engines reached 124 units. The company has been supplying LNG and methanol-compatible engines since 2015 and continues to expand into ammonia and hydrogen technologies.
The company also noted that it maintained the leading market share for marine engines in Japan during 2025, accounting for 62% of the domestic market.
Container crane business improves profitability
The Logistics Systems segment, which includes container cranes and after-sales services, recorded a significant improvement in profitability. Operating income increased by ¥8 billion year-on-year to ¥13.9 billion, while revenue climbed to ¥65.2 billion.
The company said the improvement was driven by strong utilisation rates, progress on large overseas projects and production efficiency enhancements at its Oita Works facility.
Mitsui E&S also secured an order for 17 eco-friendly rubber-tired gantry cranes for the Y3 berth at the Port of Tokyo. The remotely operated cranes are powered by electricity instead of diesel generators and are designed to support decarbonisation and digital transformation initiatives at the port.
The company said it captured all domestic orders for container cranes during the fiscal year while also increasing global deliveries.
Focus on green and digital technologies
Mitsui E&S continues to position green and digital technologies at the centre of its growth strategy. The company is investing in dual-fuel engines, remote-operated cranes, smart port systems and inspection technologies such as its Drone Snap Solution, a cloud-based drone inspection platform powered by AI.
Looking ahead, Mitsui E&S forecasts new orders and revenue to increase further during fiscal year 2027, with net sales expected to reach ¥370 billion. However, operating income is projected to decline slightly to ¥32 billion due to higher fixed costs linked to growth investments.
