Lloyd’s Register approves high-capacity GasEntec FSRU design

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to GasEntec for a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) design capable of delivering up to one billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

The approval followed an independent assessment of the design’s technical and safety fundamentals. It was presented during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.

Once delivered, the concept would rank among the world’s largest FSRUs by send-out capacity, according to LR.

Multi-mode regasification system

A key feature of the GasEntec FSRU is its multi-mode regasification system.

The system can operate in open-loop, closed-loop and combined-loop modes. As a result, operators can adapt the unit to different environmental conditions, regulatory requirements and project needs.

The FSRU also uses a modular architecture. This allows the design to be configured for different capacities, pressures and operating conditions.

“As developers look to bring LNG import capacity online quickly, operators need solutions that can perform reliably across different climates, weather conditions and regulatory environments,” said Jose Navarro, Global Gas Technology Director, Lloyd’s Register.

Navarro added that the combination of high send-out capacity and operational flexibility could help address challenges facing future FSRU projects.

GasEntec targets future FSRU projects

GasEntec plans to use its first LR AiP to move the concept towards execution and support future projects for FSRU owners and developers.

“This FSRU delivers a common modular platform that can be configured for different capacities, pressures and operating conditions, enabling efficient project specific engineering and faster deployment,” said TG Kim, Co-Chief Operating Officer, GasEntec.

The company highlighted growing global energy demand as a driver for faster and more flexible LNG infrastructure.

The AiP remains an early-stage design milestone rather than an order for a specific FSRU. GasEntec will now seek to advance the concept towards potential commercial deployment.
