Laos develops as logistics link to the Greater Mekong Subregion

The Thai transportation operator Sitthi Logistics and the Lao Government are developing Vientiane Logistics Park (VLP) and Thanaleng Dry Port in Vientiane Capital under a joint venture. The Vientiane Logistics Park is one of several priority action plans, which the Lao Government has formulated in its Logistics Development Strategy plan.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The VLP project will create a land-link between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), according to a statement, since this strategic location will serve as the distribution hub between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China after the Lao-China railways project is completed in December 2021.

In the meantime, Sitthi has made an agreement with Kalmar for two rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), three reachstackers, two empty container handlers and six terminal tractors, which will enhance its greenfield inland terminal development in Laos.

The Kalmar equipment comprises three different equipment types from the cost-efficient Kalmar Essential Range. In addition, the Finnish manufacturer will supply Sitthi with two Kalmar SmartPower RTGs, which can reduce annual fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional diesel machines.

The order was booked in 2021 first quarter order intake of Kalmar’s mother company, Cargotec, with the delivery of all units scheduled to be completed by the last quarter of the year.
