Adriatic Gate Container Terminal reaches milestone at port of Rijeka

Adriatic Gate Container Terminal, ICTSI's operation at the Port of Rijeka in Croatia, has handled four million TEUs.

Adriatic Gate Container Terminal, ICTSI’s operation at the Port of Rijeka in Croatia, has handled four million TEUs since joining the ICTSI Group in 2011, with the milestone reached fifteen years into the partnership and five years after AGCT crossed the two million TEU mark.

The achievement reflects sustained growth in container traffic through Croatia’s largest seaport and AGCT’s expanding role as a regional Adriatic gateway connecting global shipping networks with inland markets across Central and Southeast Europe.

Much of AGCT’s cargo moves beyond Croatia through rail and road connections to key hinterland markets including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia.

Hans-Ole Madsen, ICTSI Senior Vice President and EMEA Regional Head, attributed the growth to continued investment in infrastructure, equipment and intermodal connectivity, which has strengthened Rijeka’s position within regional supply chains and improved trade access for customers throughout the terminal’s hinterland.

In late 2025, AGCT completed a EUR 35 million investment programme adding two super post-Panamax quay cranes capable of handling the largest container vessels calling at Adriatic ports, and two hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes that increase yard capacity while reducing fuel consumption.

The terminal is also replacing diesel-powered terminal tractors with electric units and converting existing rubber-tired gantry cranes to hybrid operation, advancing its sustainability transition alongside its capacity expansion.

AGCT CEO Iñigo Nuñez Mendibe described the four million TEU milestone as reflecting the commitment of the terminal’s employees, the confidence of its customers and the partnerships built across the Port of Rijeka community over fifteen years with ICTSI.
