Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE), together with Malaysia-based MISC Berhad, has secured a time charter contract from Northern Lights for a newly built 12,000 cubic metre liquefied CO2 carrier.

The vessel will be constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore and will support cross-border carbon dioxide transportation operations across Europe.

The latest agreement follows a previous charter contract signed in January 2026 for another 12,000 cubic metre liquefied CO2 carrier, bringing the number of newly contracted vessels under the partnership to two.

According to K LINE, both vessels will be deployed in European CO2 transportation networks supporting carbon capture and storage projects.

The company already manages the operations of three 7,500 cubic metre liquefied CO2 carriers for Northern Lights and said the new agreement further strengthens its cooperation with the carbon transport and storage developer.

K LINE noted that its partnership with MISC, developed through previous collaboration in LNG shipping, continues to expand into new low-carbon shipping segments.

The company said the contract aligns with its long-term Environmental Vision 2050 strategy, under which it aims to accelerate decarbonization efforts both within its own operations and across the wider maritime industry.

By expanding its liquefied CO2 shipping activities, K LINE said it intends to build on operational experience gained in the segment while supporting the development of Europe’s carbon capture infrastructure and broader decarbonization initiatives.
