Intra-Asia container rates rise 2% as Hormuz disruption pressures market

index

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) increased 2% to US$959 per 40ft container on 22 May, reflecting continued pressure on regional freight markets.

The index is now nearly 75% higher than levels recorded before the Iran conflict escalated.

According to Drewry, higher bunker costs, vessel rerouting, tighter effective capacity and ongoing disruption around the Strait of Hormuz continue to push rates upward across intra-Asia trades.

The IACI tracks spot freight rates across 18 major trade routes within Asia and is updated weekly.

Drewry said the latest increase highlights sustained market volatility as carriers adjust operations amid geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain disruptions.

The monitored routes include key corridors linking Shanghai with Busan, Singapore, Jebel Ali, Yokohama, Jakarta, Manila and other major Asian ports.
