Grimaldi Group christened its ammonia-ready pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Grande Svezia at the port of Wallhamn in Sweden.
The vessel joined Grimaldi’s next-generation fleet in December 2025. The company designed the ship for future ammonia fuel use.
Wallhamn, Sweden’s only private port, hosted the ceremony. Grimaldi operates the port.
Grande Svezia serves the Group’s EuroMed network. The service connects major ports across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Representatives from Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks attended the event.
Francesca Gamboni, Chief Industrial Operations Officer at Volvo Cars, served as the vessel’s godmother.
China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu built the vessel.
Grande Svezia is 220 meters long and can carry up to 9,000 CEU across 14 decks.
The ship transports both electric and conventional vehicles.
Grimaldi equipped the vessel with several green technologies. These include 5 MWh lithium batteries, cold ironing capability and 2,500 square meters of solar panels.
The vessel also features exhaust gas cleaning systems, an air lubrication system and an optimized hull design.
According to Grimaldi, Grande Svezia cuts fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to previous car carrier generations.
The Group currently operates 11 ammonia-ready PCTCs. Six more vessels will join the fleet by 2027.
