Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) recorded its first weekly increase in two weeks, rising by 4% in the third week of April to reach $870 per FEU. On an annual basis, the index remains significantly higher, up 23% compared to the same period last year.
The latest data reflects a mixed picture across key intra-Asia trade routes. Spot rates from Busan to Shanghai remained unchanged at $53 per FEU. Rates from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai saw a notable increase of 36%, reaching $60 per FEU, while shipments from Jakarta to Shanghai rose by 12% to $57 per FEU.
On longer-haul routes, rates from Shanghai to Jawaharlal Nehru Port declined by 5% to $1,275 per FEU. In contrast, Shanghai to Singapore rates increased by 5% to $771 per FEU, and Shanghai to Tanjung Pelepas rose by 7% to $1,356 per FEU.
Elsewhere, rates from Shanghai to Yokohama remained stable at $790 per FEU, while the return leg from Yokohama to Shanghai decreased by 7% to $95 per FEU.
The overall increase in the index comes despite diverging trends across individual lanes, highlighting continued volatility in intra-Asia container shipping markets.
