HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and BAR Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate the deployment of WindWings® wind-assisted propulsion systems across newbuild vessels.
The agreement establishes a strategic partnership focused on technical collaboration and commercial deployment of the rigid wing sail technology.
The companies will work together during vessel design stages to improve integration of WindWings into future ship designs.
The partnership will also focus on linking the WindWings control system with HHI’s vessel control platforms and developing performance verification methods.
The companies expect the collaboration to support wider adoption of wind-assisted propulsion across vessel segments, including gas carriers.
HHI said the partnership reflects growing confidence in wind-assisted propulsion as shipowners seek solutions to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
The agreement has an initial duration of three years.
The partnership builds on existing WindWings installations already deployed on retrofit and newbuild vessels.
BAR Technologies said the collaboration aims to move wind propulsion beyond early adoption and into mainstream shipbuilding.
Growing fuel costs, tightening environmental regulations and decarbonization targets continue increasing interest in wind-assisted technologies across commercial shipping.
