Hapag-Lloyd expands West Africa footprint

Hapag-Lloyd has announced a strategic expansion in West Africa with the official opening of a new office in Cotonou, Benin.

Hapag-Lloyd has announced a strategic expansion in West Africa with the official opening of a new office in Cotonou, Benin. Scheduled to begin operations on May 20, the new facility allows the shipping company to provide direct support and dedicated local services to its growing customer base in the region.

The decision to establish a physical presence comes as Benin emerges as an increasingly vital market. Driven by consistent economic growth and significant investments in trade facilitation and infrastructure, the nation has become a focal point for regional logistics. The Port of Cotonou, in particular, serves as a critical maritime gateway not only for Benin but also for landlocked neighboring countries including Niger and Burkina Faso.

While Hapag-Lloyd has previously managed its Beninese operations through a broader regional network, this dedicated office is designed to enhance responsiveness and offer shipping solutions specifically tailored to the local market. The move aligns with the company’s broader “Strategy 2030,” which prioritizes growth in emerging trade lanes and deepening customer relationships through localized expertise.

“Opening our new office in Benin is an important step in strengthening our presence in West Africa,” said Jesper Kanstrup Managing Director Sub-Region Africa Hapag-Lloyd. “Benin plays an important role in our growth ambitions under Strategy 2030. With a dedicated local presence, we can be closer to our customers and partners while supporting the continued development of trade in the region.”
