Eimskip cleared as prosecutor files charges against company

The Icelandic District Prosecutor has discontinued its investigation into the Chief Operational Officer of Eimskip

The Icelandic District Prosecutor has discontinued its investigation into the Chief Operational Officer of Eimskip in connection with the sale of two vessels, bringing the case against the executive to a close.

The investigation was originally launched following a report submitted in 2020 by the Environment Agency of Iceland. With the decision to drop the case, the executive’s status as a defendant has been lifted.

At the same time, the prosecutor has issued indictments against Eimskipafélag Íslands hf. and Eimskip Ísland ehf. in relation to the same matter. Authorities are seeking convictions against the companies, including the payment of legal costs.

Eimskip stated that it believes it acted in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations during the sales process, maintaining that the vessels were sold for continued trading and not for recycling.

The company also noted that it welcomes the resolution of uncertainty for its employees and confirmed it will defend its position in court as the case proceeds.
