DNV and Navis have announced a new joint solution to minimise the risk of container accidents at sea, combining DNV Anti-Roll Assist and Navis Mooring Monitor.
“Container losses are rare, but the impact of those losses can be very significant – both in financial and reputational terms,” said Arne Schulz-Heimbeck, senior principal engineer and programme development manager for container ships at DNV Maritime.
“DNV Anti-Roll Assist deployed together with Navis Lashing Monitor gives captains and crews a clear and simple picture of the risk of container loss based on their heading and speed and supports them in assessing if they need to make navigational adjustments,” Schulz-Heimbeck continued.
Through careful maintenance and high-quality mooring systems and equipment, container ships can operate safely, even in difficult conditions, according to a statement, However, even so, there can be parametric rolling, which can be very challenging to predict and increases the risk of losing the container.
The two companies believe that by integrating Anti-Roll Assist marine calculations into the Navis Lashing Monitor tool, which monitors vessel movement data and mooring forces in real time, vessel operators and crews can see design values alongside actual load and cargo securing data.
Meanwhile, MSC has already agreed with DNV to apply the Anti-Roll Assist and ARCS (Anti-Roll for Containerships) system to 100 container vessels.
“Crews are balancing maximum loading capacity, time pressure and profitability, while having to deliver optimum vessel-safe seakeeping behavior in ever-changing weather situations,” said Carlos Barbera, vice president of product at Navis.
