CMA CGM has announced three Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) on shipments from Asia to Africa, with charges of up to US$750 per TEU taking effect in October 2026.
The new surcharges cover shipments from the Far East to Durban, South Africa, from Southeast Asia to northern West Africa, and from China to Mozambique.
The highest surcharge applies to cargo moving from the Far East to Durban, while the other two trade routes will face additional charges of US$200 per TEU.
New surcharge for Durban shipments
From 22 October 2026, CMA CGM will apply a PSS of US$750 per TEU on shipments from the Far East to Durban, South Africa.
The surcharge applies to all cargo types and will remain in effect until further notice.
For shipments originating in China, the charge will be subject to the carrier’s filing with the Shanghai Shipping Exchange and/or may be included in the ocean freight rate.
Additional charges for West Africa and Mozambique
CMA CGM will also introduce a PSS of US$200 per TEU on shipments from Southeast Asia to northern West Africa, effective 15 October 2026.
The surcharge applies to all cargo under short-term contracts.
The destinations covered include Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Separately, the French shipping company will implement a PSS of US$200 per TEU on shipments from China to Mozambique.
This charge will take effect on 22 October 2026 and remain applicable until further notice. It covers all cargo types.
As with the Durban surcharge, shipments originating in China will be subject to the relevant Shanghai Shipping Exchange filing requirements and/or inclusion of the PSS in ocean freight.
The announced surcharges are additional to the applicable basic freight rates. CMA CGM noted that bunker-related charges, terminal handling charges, safety and security surcharges, and other local or contingency charges may also apply.
