ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have completed a joint development project for a 16,000-TEU container ship equipped with a battery hybrid system.
The partners developed the vessel to improve energy efficiency and support maritime decarbonisation efforts.
At Posidonia 2026, ABS awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD KSOE and HD HHI for the ship’s electrical design and electrical analysis.
ABS conducted design reviews and verified compliance with class requirements.
The project focuses on integrating battery technology into large commercial vessels to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions.
Joshua Divin, Senior Vice President of Marine Business Development at ABS, said the approval marks another milestone in the collaboration between the three companies.
He said ABS remains committed to supporting the safe deployment of hybrid electrical systems through technical expertise and industry guidance.
Divin added that the collaboration will help advance a safer and more efficient maritime industry.
Byung-Hun Kwon, Executive Vice President and Head of the Electrification Center at HD KSOE, said the project supports the International Maritime Organization’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
He added that HD KSOE will continue to develop environmentally friendly and high-efficiency ship technologies, including battery-integrated solutions, to strengthen confidence among shipowners and classification societies.
