Wilson Sons launches new tugboat for operations at Port of Santos

Wilson Sons has launched WS Capella, a new high-powered tugboat that will operate at the Port of Santos.

The vessel is the second of three new tugboats being added under the company’s fleet renewal strategy.

Built at Wilson Sons’ Guarujá shipyard, WS Capella is an ASD 2312 class tugboat. It measures 23 metres in length and 12 metres in width. The tug features azimuth thrusters and delivers 70 tons of bollard pull.

The vessel can handle New Panamax ships during docking and undocking operations at the Port of Santos, the largest port complex in Latin America.

Wilson Sons said the tug’s modern design reduces fuel consumption and emissions. WS Capella also includes a FiFi 1 firefighting system capable of pumping 2.4 million litres of water per hour.

“With its power, WS Capella will fully meet the requirements necessary for the safe handling of increasingly larger ships,” said Márcio Castro, Executive Director of the Towage division at Wilson Sons.

Wilson Sons currently operates 83 tugboats along the Brazilian coast. The company is also building a third ASD 2312 tugboat, scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2026.

With the new range of vessels, Wilson Sons will reach 156 vessels built at its shipyard.
