A bulk carrier under Wallem Group management rescued two Filipino fishermen after their vessel began sinking near the Babuyan Islands in the Philippines.
The incident took place in May while the vessel was sailing from Abbot Point, Australia, to Cam Pha, Vietnam.
The ship was carrying a full cargo of 80,000 tonnes of coal.
At around 08:35 local time, the crew spotted a small fishing boat in distress.
The fishermen onboard were waving for help.
Under the guidance of the vessel’s master, the crew stopped the bulk carrier and prepared the rescue boat.
The crew quickly launched the rescue craft and recovered both fishermen safely.
The all-Chinese crew completed the operation in open waters.
After the rescue, the vessel proceeded to a rendezvous point.
A Philippine Coast Guard high-speed response vessel met the ship and received the rescued fishermen.
The Philippine Coast Guard thanked the crew for their immediate response.
“Special appreciation goes to the Captain and Wallem team for their professional guidance throughout the operation,” a Coast Guard representative said.
Subramanian Rajagopal, Marine & Safety Director at Wallem Group, highlighted the crew’s performance during the incident.
“The rescue is a clear testament to the crew’s strong seamanship, effective training, and commitment to safety at sea. It ensured that decisive action was taken swiftly when lives were at risk,” he said.
The incident highlights the role of merchant vessels and crews in responding to emergencies at sea.
