The UK government will bring together departments, regulators and industry representatives to explore the development of a coordinated maritime nuclear strategy.
The commitment followed discussions with the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO) during the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna.
Government departments to examine maritime nuclear
Michael Shanks, Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, agreed to convene relevant government bodies and industry representatives to discuss the way forward.
The process is expected to involve the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for Transport, alongside regulators and NEMO.
However, the UK has not yet adopted a maritime nuclear strategy. The planned discussions are intended to identify practical steps that could form the basis of a more coordinated approach.
Shanks also called on the maritime nuclear sector to develop concrete proposals for government and industry to consider.
NEMO calls for coordinated UK approach
NEMO argues that the UK could combine its existing nuclear capabilities with its maritime, regulatory and professional-services sectors to support the development of nuclear technologies at sea.
“This is precisely the leadership the sector needs,” said Virginia Crosbie, CEO of NEMO.
She said the organisation would respond to the government’s request by developing practical proposals for further action.
The discussions could cover areas including nuclear-powered shipping and floating nuclear power, although no specific projects or investment commitments were announced.
Maritime nuclear discussions continue in Vienna
The discussions took place during the IAEA General Conference, where NEMO is participating as part of the UK delegation.
Other UK participants include representatives from government departments, the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency, UK National Nuclear Laboratory and the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
Industry representatives include companies and organisations involved in nuclear technology, engineering, regulation and professional services.
NEMO is also presenting its “Enabling the Maritime Nuclear Future” initiative during the conference, focusing on the regulatory and commercial framework needed for nuclear-powered shipping and floating nuclear power.
