
U.S. container imports from 10 major Asian economies reached 1.67 million TEUs in March. This marks a 1.3% increase year on year, according to Descartes Datamyne data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Volumes also rose 7.2% from February.
Overall U.S. container imports totaled 2.36 million TEUs. This is a 0.3% decline compared to last year.
China remained the largest source of imports, but volumes fell 6% to 783,111 TEUs. Vietnam posted strong growth, up 39.7% to 257,655 TEUs. South Korea increased 7% to 230,060 TEUs. Singapore fell 9.8% to 74,573 TEUs. India dropped 17.8% to 71,640 TEUs. Japan declined 14.1% to 36,564 TEUs and ranked ninth.
In the first quarter, the U.S. imported 4.94 million TEUs from the 10 Asian economies. This represents a 3.8% year-on-year increase. Total U.S. container imports reached 6.78 million TEUs, down 4.2%.
China still led quarterly volumes, but imports fell 12.8% to 2.47 million TEUs. Vietnam grew 39.2% to 757,928 TEUs. South Korea declined 6.1% to 590,004 TEUs. Singapore fell 11.9% to 210,871 TEUs. India dropped 10.7% to 208,827 TEUs. Japan decreased 10.1% to 97,674 TEUs and ranked ninth
