After an illustrious career spanning over five decades, with the last 18 years dedicated to serving as the Global Risk Assessment director at TT Club, Laurence Jones has announced his retirement plans for 2024.
During his tenure at TT Club, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Laurence has been a steadfast advocate for safety within the port and terminal sector. His commitment has significantly contributed to enhancing safety measures not only for TT’s membership but also for the broader industry.
Leveraging his extensive industry expertise, Laurence Jones has played a pivotal role in augmenting TT’s global presence and bolstering its credibility across the industry landscape.
“In his time with us Laurence has applied his deep expertise of port and terminal operations and enthusiasm for improving safety and security for the benefit of the Membership,” stated Peregrine Storrs-Fox, director of Risk Management.
He added, “I’m pleased that Laurence has agreed to dedicate this year to continuing to transfer his skills and knowledge within the business, including to last year’s newcomers, Neil Dalus and Josh Finch, who is already expanding the capacity of the loss prevention function to deliver TT’s high standards of risk assessment and risk management output.”
With a rich background as a qualified engineer, Laurence Jones has amassed an impressive 52-year career, showcasing expertise across a diverse array of fields including general management, operations, maintenance, design, construction, and various engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and civil. His professional journey has traversed through bulk materials handling, container terminals, logistics, manufacturing, and insurance sectors.
Before joining TT Club, Laurence Jones spent 26 years at BHP Billiton followed by eight years at P&O Ports, where he contributed significantly to container terminal operations. His role expanded upon the integration of P&O Ports and DP World, leading him to join TT in December 2006. His responsibilities encompassed providing internal guidance on underwriting decisions and claims assessment, while also actively engaging with TT Club’s membership to identify and mitigate potential risks.
Jones’ active involvement in industry events has made him a familiar figure, particularly as a skilled moderator adept at eliciting insightful discussions from panellists and audience members alike.
Beyond his contributions to TT, Laurence Jones has been an enthusiastic participant in industry organizations such as ICHCA boards and Technical Panels, as well as supporting initiatives within the Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA) and the International Association of Ports & Harbors (IAPH), with a special focus on advocating for safety measures based on loss experience.
