Starnav Serviços Marítimos has taken delivery of Starnav Elektra, the first hybrid platform supply vessel (PSV) designed and built in Brazil. The vessel was constructed by Detroit Brasil at its Itajaí shipyard and delivered to ABS class.

The 92.1-metre vessel has a deadweight capacity of 5,500 tonnes and will operate under a long-term charter with Petrobras. It will support the company’s offshore logistics activities in Brazilian waters.

The delivery is part of Starnav’s plans to expand its hybrid fleet. The company is planning a series of up to 10 vessels, including six PSVs and four oil spill response vessels.

Battery system improves operational efficiency

Starnav Elektra is equipped with a 1,322 kWh battery system that supports its dynamic positioning operations. If one engine fails, the batteries can keep the vessel in position for up to 20 minutes. This capability forms part of its DP2 requirements.

The batteries are installed on the main deck, making them easier to access for maintenance. The system also allows the vessel to operate with fewer generators while maintaining the required safety margins. This can help reduce fuel consumption, emissions and engine maintenance.

The vessel has received the ABS ESS-LiBATTERY, HYBRID and SUSTAIN-1 class notations. It is also designed to use renewable fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

With Starnav Elektra now delivered, Starnav has introduced battery-hybrid technology into its Brazilian offshore support operations. Further vessels are planned as part of the company’s fleet development programme.
