SC Ports to pause Leatherman Terminal operations from August

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) will temporarily suspend container operations at Leatherman Terminal from 1 August as the port responds to softer cargo volumes and an uncertain trade outlook.

Container operations will be consolidated at the Wando and North Charleston terminals. SC Ports said both facilities have sufficient capacity to handle current cargo volumes and support future growth.

The port authority said the decision reflects ongoing industry headwinds, uncertain trade conditions and weaker demand. It aims to improve cost competitiveness while positioning the business for long-term growth.

“We are working with our maritime partners to make this business decision to achieve long-term, sustainable growth,” said Micah Mallace, President and CEO of South Carolina Ports.

Mallace added that the port remains focused on retaining existing customers and attracting new business to Charleston.

SC Ports said customers can expect the same level of service during the temporary consolidation. The authority stressed that the Port of Charleston will continue to provide reliable operations while strengthening its competitive position in the Southeast U.S. market.
