PortXchange has joined the SASHA Coalition as its first member focused on port emissions and operational intelligence.
The coalition brings together companies developing sustainable energy systems for shipping and aviation. These systems include renewable hydrogen and zero-emission technologies.
Moreover, the SASHA Coalition advocates for policies that support their development and adoption.
Bringing ports into policy discussions
PortXchange will work with the coalition on policy, funding and infrastructure decisions. The company aims to ensure that ports actively participate in these discussions.
Ports play a central role in delivering new fuels and developing supporting infrastructure. Therefore, PortXchange believes they must contribute to decisions about the energy transition.
“Ports’ potential to drive climate action has been largely overlooked,” said Sjoerd de Jager, Managing Director and Co-Founder, PortXchange.
“We will not achieve the emissions reductions needed, at the pace required, until all the actors across the value chain collaborate,” added de Jager.
“That is why PortXchange is joining the SASHA Coalition: to bring the port perspective into the conversation and help turn zero-emission ambition into action,” he continued.
Infrastructure and operational readiness
PortXchange said producing cleaner fuels represents only one part of the transition. Ports must also have suitable infrastructure and operational readiness.
“Cleaner fuels are essential, but producing them is only half the job. The transition has to work when it reaches the port,” said de Jager.
“That means understanding where future demand is likely to emerge, where infrastructure will have the greatest impact and how those investments fit with real port operations,” he added.
Ports bring together vessels, fuels, infrastructure, cargo and local communities. Consequently, their operational requirements can influence the success of new energy systems.
“If the port perspective is missing, we risk building an energy transition that looks convincing on paper but struggles in practice,” said de Jager.
SASHA welcomes PortXchange
The SASHA Coalition highlighted the importance of cooperation across the shipping sector.
“We will only see shipping on track for net zero when all actors are working together across the sector,” said Sabrina Khan-Dighe, Membership and Advocacy Officer, SASHA Coalition.
“Ports’ importance as a key to unlocking cross-sector decarbonisation cannot be overstated,” added Khan-Dighe.
“Developing cleaner fuels and technologies is critical, but adoption will depend on ports having the right infrastructure and operational readiness to support investment,” she continued.
Khan-Dighe also welcomed PortXchange’s contribution to the coalition’s calls for regulatory change.
