Port of Valencia sees container volume drop in June

TEU volumes transported by Valenciaport continues to show a negative trend, with the Spanish port recording 458,139 containers in June, translating to a 7.13% decrease compared to the same month last year.

Full containers intended for exports and imports, however, showed an increase in June, for the second month in a row. The increases were 1.78% and 10.71% in May and June, respectively, according to data from the Statistical Bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV). On the other hand, for empty containers, the overall figure reflects a decrease of 4.56%.

Global uncertainty created by the war in Ukraine, rising fuel prices, high raw material prices and inflation are weighing on port activity, according to the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV).

From January until June of this year, Valenciaport has handled a total of 41,641,585 tonnes, 2.37% less than the same period in 2021, while the Spanish port’s containerised cargo has fallen by 7.55% in terms of tonnes. During the first six months of 2022, a total of 2,637,604 TEU have been moved through the port, representing a decrease of 6.46%.

However, port officials remain optimistic as they believe that the reduction in congestion in China and the West Coast of the United States will increase the traffic at the port of Valencia.
