A new traffic overpass connecting Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala will open on November 1, 2026, alongside a new port checkpoint at 42 Uriekstes Street, designated Delta 17, to facilitate freight traffic to and from the Port of Riga’s territory on Kundziņsala.
The EUR 82.6 million infrastructure project has been carried out by the Riga City Council in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority, co-financed through the EU Cohesion Fund, with EUR 23 million from a state budget grant, EUR 59.6 million from a state budget loan and EUR 4.5 million from EU Cohesion Fund contributions.
From November 1, freight vehicles will have two round-the-clock options to access Kundziņsala: via the new overpass through the Delta 17 checkpoint at 42 Uriekstes Street, or via the existing checkpoint at 9 Uriekstes Street, designated Delta 1.
This transitional arrangement will remain in effect until the end of 2026. From January 1, 2027, the Delta 1 checkpoint at 9 Uriekstes Street will close to Kundziņsala-bound traffic, with all freight routed exclusively through the new overpass via Delta 17.
Port terminal employees working on the island will be able to access Kundziņsala via the new overpass or through the existing Aptiekas Street route via the Delta 3 checkpoint at 36 Kundziņsala 3rd Line, open on workdays from 6:00am to 8:00pm, with prior coordination required for construction site access.
The new overpass is fully accessible to residents of surrounding neighbourhoods, featuring an additional turning lane for vehicles travelling to and from the Kundziņsala residential area, a new pedestrian and bicycle path with lighting and dedicated runner lane markings, and three stair-equipped ramps on Tvaika Street and Kundziņsala.
Freight carriers should note that while the new border crossing facility remains under construction, border inspection, customs control and food safety inspection services will continue to operate at 16 Uriekstes Street, with ionising radiation scanning for road cargo conducted at the Delta 17 address.
