Hambantota International Port has delivered 167,569 vehicles across the March to December 2025 period and through September 2026, supporting vehicle importers through periods of increased demand and supply chain disruption.
Of the total, 86,389 vehicles were delivered between March and December 2025, comprising 30,809 brand new and 55,580 used vehicles, with a further 81,180 vehicles delivered through September 2026, including 25,018 brand new and 56,162 used units.
HIPG responded to several operational challenges during the period, including demurrage waivers and concessions during the period of vehicle import restrictions when customers’ vehicles remained at the port for extended periods.
More recently, disruptions to vehicle transhipment through the Gulf region prompted HIPG to introduce a storage cap mechanism for affected vehicles, helping manage storage costs and providing customers with greater cost predictability during the disruption period.
The Vehicle Importers’ Association of Lanka, representing more than 450 members across Sri Lanka including established companies and micro, small and medium enterprises, recognised HIPG’s responsiveness, operational flexibility and practical support in addressing challenges faced by its members.
HIPG CEO Wilson Qu described the close dialogue with VIAL as essential to understanding customers’ operational needs and responding effectively as market conditions change, framing the relationship as reflective of the port’s commitment to efficient vehicle handling and supply chain continuity.
General Manager Commercial and Marketing Bindu Ranasinghe highlighted the focus on helping customers manage costs through practical measures while building long-term trust.
VIAL President Sampath Merenchige expressed appreciation for the port’s willingness to provide timely operational solutions and flexibility in support of its members.
