Port of Naples completes first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation

The Port of Naples has completed its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation, marking a milestone in the development of Italy’s low-emission maritime infrastructure.

The operation supplied Sun Princess, an LNG-fuelled cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation.

Axpo carried out the bunkering using the LNG bunker vessel Green Zeebrugge.

The project involved several partners.

Bureau Veritas (BV) reviewed the technical documentation and verified compliance with Italian maritime regulations.

Studio di Ingegneria Benvenuto & Associati prepared the Quantitative Risk Assessment for the operation.

The partners carried out the bunkering in line with international LNG bunkering standards and Italian regulatory requirements.

The successful operation establishes the Port of Naples as an LNG bunkering location for cruise vessels. It also creates an operational framework for similar activities at other Italian ports.

The project highlights the growing cooperation between ship operators, fuel suppliers, engineering companies, classification societies and regulatory authorities as the maritime industry expands the use of alternative fuels.

Simone Rodolfi, Head of Origination and Structured Products at Axpo Italia, said the operation demonstrates the industry’s commitment to more sustainable shipping.

He said the combined expertise of Axpo, Studio Benvenuto and Bureau Veritas is helping build the infrastructure and regulatory framework needed to support the transition to lower-emission maritime operations in Italy.
