The Montreal Port Authority and the Adani Group have renewed their collaboration agreement during Team Canada’s trade mission to India, signed in Mumbai by Captain Sandeep Mehta representing the Adani Group and Marie-Claude Galarneau, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating and Transformation Officer of the MPA, in the presence of Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu.
The renewal builds on a partnership that began with the first collaboration agreement in 2018.
India has become one of the Port of Montreal’s most significant trading partners, ranking second among the port’s markets in 2025 with 1 million tonnes of goods exchanged, comprising 60 percent exports and 40% imports.
Principal commodities include food products, ceramic products and plastics on the import side, and forestry and metal products on the export side.
The renewed agreement focuses on developing trade through the Mundra-Montreal maritime corridor, joint promotion and information sharing to identify new business opportunities, sharing port and technological expertise to improve operations and road and rail transportation fluidity, and exploring new areas of collaboration including vehicle transportation.
As part of its strengthened commitment to the Indian market, the MPA has appointed Prakash Tulsiani as its new agent in India, facilitating engagement with shipping lines, freight forwarders and importing and exporting companies and raising awareness of business development opportunities between the two countries.
The initiative supports trade diversification and supply chain resilience against the backdrop of a changing global trade environment, with India projected by the IMF to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2027 to 2028.
MPA President and CEO Paul Bird described India as a major trading partner and expressed ambition to facilitate trade and strengthen Montreal’s role as a strategic gateway between India and the economic heart of North America.
Minister Sidhu highlighted the opportunity for Canadian businesses to reach one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, noting progress toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with India.
