Peel Ports Logistics has recently inked a contract to serve as the shipping agency for Drax, a renewable energy specialist, facilitating the arrival of biomass-carrying vessels at the Port of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.
This partnership aims to support the transportation of renewable fuel to Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire. Peel Ports Logistics, as the designated service provider, welcomed the Aikaterini bulk carrier, marking the beginning of their representation of approximately 50 vessels annually, each carrying up to 50,000 tonnes of biomass.
The comprehensive services provided include logistics support for vessel arrivals, crew assistance, and customs clearance. The services provided to Drax will include supporting logistics around the arrival of the power specialist’s vessels and crew, as well as customs clearance.
“Everyone at Peel Ports Logistics is proud to have been chosen as Drax’s new shipping agency. The agreement is a testament to the knowledge and experience of our teams, and a real vote of confidence to start 2024. The wider Peel Ports Group already has a great working relationship with Drax, and we look forward to building on that partnership in the months ahead,” stated Sebastian Gardiner, managing director at Peel Ports Logistics.
Commencing operations in 2016, the biomass handling facility at the Port of Liverpool securely stores pellets in three purpose-built silos after unloading from vessels. Handling a capacity of up to 3 million tonnes annually, the port imports biomass from various global sources. The sustainable fuel undergoes daily train transportation from Liverpool to fuel the plant in Selby.
“Our new partnership with Peel Port Logistics strengthens Drax’s global supply chain, ensuring we help keep the lights on for millions of British households and businesses for many more years to come. The biomass brought ashore at ports such as Liverpool strengthens the UK’s national energy security and supports thousands of jobs right across the country,” commented Mark Gibbens, head of Logistics at Drax.
