Peel Ports Group has announced that Chief Executive Officer Claudio Veritiero is stepping down after nearly five years in the role and six years with the company.
Mark Whitworth, the group’s Non-Executive Chairman and former Chief Executive, will take over as Executive Chairman on an interim basis while the company appoints a successor.
The leadership change follows a period of growth and investment across Peel Ports Group’s UK port operations.
During Veritiero’s tenure, the company recorded annual profitability growth of 9%, alongside substantial increases in revenue.
Major port investments under Veritiero’s leadership
Veritiero oversaw several infrastructure projects aimed at expanding the group’s cargo-handling and logistics capabilities.
These included the £28 million Alexandra Complex warehousing development at the Port of Liverpool and a £30 million expansion of roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) facilities at London Medway.
The company also invested £25 million in new ship-to-shore cranes at the Port of Greenock.
In addition, Veritiero led the acquisition of Humber Bulk Terminal, strengthening the group’s presence in the UK bulk cargo market.
The investments formed part of Peel Ports Group’s efforts to increase capacity and support cargo flows through its port network.
Whitworth assumes interim leadership
Veritiero said his decision to leave was driven by personal priorities and a desire to spend more time with his family.
“It has been a huge privilege to lead Peel Ports Group through such an important period of sustained growth and transformation, and to work with so many talented, experienced and committed people,” he said.
“I leave with enormous pride in what we have achieved together and with complete confidence in the future of the business.”
Whitworth, who previously served as the group’s Chief Executive, will oversee the business during the leadership transition.
“This is a very personal decision by Claudio which we understand and respect. The company is very grateful for the extraordinary effort he has devoted to the company during his time with us,” Whitworth said.
Peel Ports Group has not announced a successor or provided a timetable for the appointment of its next Chief Executive.
