NYK secures deal for green ammonia transport from India to Japan

On 20 August, NYK signed a preliminary agreement for the marine transport of green ammonia to Japan, in partnership with Kyushu Electric Power Company, Incorporated (“Kyushu Electric”), Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”), and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen (“Sembcorp”), a subsidiary of the major Asian energy firm Sembcorp Industries, a leading energy company in Asia engaged in a project to produce green ammonia.

The agreement was formalized in Delhi, India, with NYK’s General Manager of the Next Generation Fuel Business Group, Takahiro Rokuroda, present at the ceremony.

The project aims to produce competitive green ammonia in India, leveraging its ample renewable energy resources.

In June, Kyushu Electric, Sojitz, and Sembcorp agreed to supply this green ammonia to various industrial clients in Japan, mainly in the Kyushu region.

The deal envisions the production of approximately 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually, which will be transported to the Kyushu region to meet local demand, drawing on NYK’s expertise in ammonia marine transport.

NYK will play a key role in developing the supply chain for next-generation energy sources like ammonia, supporting energy needs in Kyushu and across Japan.
