Nidec ASI to run US$2.7 million sustainability project at French port

Nidec ASI which is part of the Energy & Infrastructure Division of the Nidec Group, won the tender for implementing a ‘shore-to-ship’ project for the Port of Sète in the south of France.

Nidec ASI has signed a contract worth US$2.7 million with Port Sud de France in order to set up innovative electrical power systems that will allow ships moored in the port to draw the energy required to be fully operational from the quays, without the need to keep their polluting and noisy on-board diesel engines running.

The port of Sète, which is located along the coast of the Gulf of Lion in the Hérault region, will house three turnkey power supply systems which will be developed to power three different quays, consisting of converters and transformers developed in the Milan and Montebello plants. These systems will allow adapting the voltage and frequency of the supply network to what is required by the ships.

“This new order confirms the competitiveness of our plug-and-play solutions, which guarantee high performance at the best price. We are convinced that the future of ports will be based on electric power in any area: road transport to move containers, automation of cranes and electric cars to move around within the port perimeter,” commented Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec ASI and chairman of Nidec Industrial Solutions.

This new project is being carried out alongside other shore-to-ship systems being implemented in Italy, France and Malta as well as in Greece and Spain.
