Four new ship-to-shore cranes have arrived at the Port of Gioia Tauro, with two more expected by the end of the month. The new equipment is provided by the Chinese port equipment manufacturer ZMPC.
In the first nine months of 2024, container traffic at the Italian port rose by 10.4%.
Following the addition of six new ship-to-shore cranes in November 2019 and three more in February 2023, the port now welcomes four additional cranes, bringing its total to 25 quay cranes and three mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) by November.
These new cranes, each with a lifting capacity of 65 tons under spreader, are capable of servicing large ocean vessels with a capacity of up to 25,000 TEUs.
Andrea Agostinelli, President of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, noted that with the arrival of these four cranes and two more on the way, the terminal is well-prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
Additionally, the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas reported that container traffic at Gioia Tauro reached 2,929,950 TEUs in the first nine months of the year, translating to a 10.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
