MSC vessel loses containers in rough seas off Portugal

The MSC-operated container ship MSC Houston V lost 15 boxes in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal on 20 March after encountering severe weather conditions.

The Portuguese-flagged vessel had departed from Piraeus, Greece, and was en route to Liverpool, UK, when it was hit by rough seas and wind gusts of up to 48 knots as Storm Martinho swept through the waters off Cape St. Vincent.

The storm caused several containers to fall overboard, while many others collapsed on deck, with some left precariously hanging over the starboard side near the stern.

Following the incident, MSC Houston V diverted to the Spanish port of Vigo to avoid the storm, arriving on the morning (local time) of 21 March.

The vessel remains docked at Vigo’s Termavi container terminal, where port authorities are assessing the situation and inspecting the condition of the containers and their cargo.
