Marshall Islands sustains premier fleet quality

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Registry continues to excel in supporting its owners and operators, maintaining the world’s highest quality fleet.

At the conclusion of day one of CMA Shipping 2024, Rear Admiral Wayne Arguin announced to RMI Registry staff that the RMI has once again attained the prestigious United States Coast Guard’s (USCG’s) QUALSHIP 21 status, marking 20 consecutive years of achievement.

“Compliance is very important to us as a registry,” stated Bill Gallagher, president of International Registries, and its affiliates (IRI), which provide administrative and technical support to the RMI Registry.

The RMI Registry is the only registry worldwide to achieve this milestone. This recognition reflects the Registry’s steadfast dedication to fostering open communication with global Port State Control (PSC) authorities, alongside a firm internal commitment to compliance, technical assistance, and exceptional customer service.

“In today’s environment, owners and operators benefit from having an active and engaged partner by their side supporting them from not only the technical, compliance, and inspections side, but also in having an active dialogue with global PSC,” he added.

The RMI Registry has made significant investments in establishing local resources globally, fostering relationships with port State control (PSC) authorities worldwide to enhance the flag and port safety mechanisms through trust and transparency. During the initial two months of 2024, representatives from the Registry have engaged with PSC authorities in Belgium, Australia, the Americas, and Greece.

These face-to-face interactions facilitate the exchange of information and constructive dialogue on PSC-related matters and industry concerns, enabling proactive measures to ensure compliance, promote safe vessel operations, and prioritize the well-being of seafarers, among other issues.

“Our fleet operations and technical teams meet regularly with PSC authorities and representatives to learn, discuss, and work together. The RMI values the QUALSHIP 21 program and has sustained the highest level of compliance of any flag year-over-year. Stakeholders that take this program seriously know that it drives compliance and improves fleet quality worldwide” commented Brian Poskaitis, senior vice president, of Fleet Operations who attended the INTERTANKO North American Panel meeting as well as a number of the PSC meetings.

Alongside its remarkable 20-year streak on the USCG’s QUALSHIP 21 roster, the RMI Registry celebrated another noteworthy achievement. In January 2024, the Registry surpassed 200 million gross tons and exceeded 5,600 vessels. Among these vessels, 1,341 are enrolled in the QUALSHIP 21 program, representing the largest contingent from any flag.
